Gas, water and multiutilities sector monthly seasonality analysis – significantly strong in August

The 2013 edition of the Almanac looks at the historic monthly performance of the FTSE 350 sectors. Here we look at the gas, water and multiutilities sector.

The following chart plots the average out-performance of the FTSE 350 gas, water and multiutilities sector over the FTSE 100 Index by month since 2003. For example, since 2003 on average the gas, water and multiutilities sector has out-performed the FTSE Index by 0.8 percentage points in February.

Observations:

  • The strongest month of the year relative to the market for the sector is August, the sector has only under-performed the market once in the last ten years in this month.
  • The sector is relatively weak in March and July.
